A strong dollar overseas and higher crude prices also capped the gains, forex dealers said. At the interbank forex market, the rupee opened strong at 78.03 against the greenback and witnessed an intra-day high of 78.02 and a low of 78.10. It finally ended at 78.05, registering a gain of 5 paise over its previous close of 78.10.

Income Tax Department conducts searches in J-K, Delhi
Income Tax Department carried out search and seizure operations at various locations in New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir, according to an official statement on Friday. According to the Finance Ministry statement, the search operations were conducted on June 15. “Income Tax Department carried out search and seizure operations on June 15, 2022, on a leading manufacturer and seller of Jamawar Shawls, Pashmina and Kashmiri Shawls. The search operation covered more than 15 premises spread across Srinagar, Anantnag and Delhi,” said the statement.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday said that it has filed a supplementary chargesheet against eight including four persons and four private firms in connection with a chit fund fraud case of Rs 191,18,90,089 cr. The chargesheet was filed before the Special CBI court in Tripura against Gautam Kundu, Shibamoy Dutta, Director, Ashok Kumar Saha, Director, Ram Lal Goswami, Rose Valley Hotel & Entertainment Ltd, Rose Valley Real Estate & Construction Ltd., Kolkata, Rose Valley Industries, Kolkata, and Real Estate & Landbank India Ltd.
Telangana records 279 new COVID-19 cases
Telangana on Friday reported 279 fresh COVID-19 cases taking the statewide tally to 7,95,572. Hyderabad saw the highest number of cases with 172. A health department bulletin said 119 people recuperated from the infectious disease and the cumulative number of recoveries till date was 7,89,680. The recovery rate stood at 99.26 per cent.
Madhya Pradesh logs 71 new COVID-19 cases; active tally rises to 421
At least 71 new cases of coronavirus were detected in Madhya Pradesh, taking the tally of infections in the state to 10,43,409 on Friday, an official from the state health department said. The toll remained steady at 10,739, while the count of recoveries rose to 10,32,249 after 50 patients recovered from the infection during the day, he said. With this, the central state currently has 421 active cases and the positivity rate stood at 1 per cent, the official said.
Nashik sees 28 COVID-19 cases, tally rises to 4,76,334
The COVID-19 tally in Nashik increased by 28 to reach 4,76,334 on Friday, while the death toll stood unchanged at 8,899, an official said. So far, 4,67,317 persons have been discharged post recovery, including 22 during the day, leaving the district with 118 active cases, he added.
Business briefs Union Bank of India hikes interest rates on deposits
State-owned Union Bank of India on Friday said it has increased interest rates on term deposits across all maturity buckets. The new rates are applicable across various tenures for domestic term deposits, Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) and Non-Resident External (NRE) term deposits. Interest rates on domestic/NRO term deposits (below Rs 2 crore) of 46-90 days tenure have been increased by 55 basis points (bps) to 4.05 per cent from 3.50 per cent, the bank said in a release.

Goa govt appoints administrators for 175 village panchayats
The Goa government on Friday appointed administrators for all 175 village panchayats, as their tenure culminates on June 19. Speaking to reporters here, state Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho said the state has not held elections for 175 panchayat bodies, which is why administrators are appointed for them. The five-year tenure of these bodies is getting over on June 19, he said.
Mumbai records 2,255 COVID-19 cases, two deaths
Mumbai on Friday reported 2,255 new coronavirus infections, a dip from the daily cases reported in the last two days, and two pandemic-related deaths, a civic official said. The financial capital of India has now 13,304 active cases, while its overall caseload rose to 10,90,503. Two new deaths took the death toll in the city to 19,580, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official said.
UK: 50 new monkeypox cases in biggest epidemic beyond Africa
British health officials reported another 50 cases of monkeypox across the country on Friday, for a total of 574 cases. That makes the U.K.’s outbreak the biggest to date beyond Africa. In a statement, Britain’s Health Security Agency said most of the cases have been identified in gay or bisexual men, but warned that anyone who is in close, physical contact with someone who has monkeypox is at risk of catching the usually rare disease. “If you have a rash with blisters, or any other monkeypox symptoms, don’t go to events, meet with friends or have sexual contact,” cautioned Dr. William Welfare of Britain’s Health Security Agency. He said people who might have been exposed to the disease should stay at home and call health services for advice.

Non-life insurers’ premium rises 24 pc to Rs 15,404 crore in May
Non-life insurance companies registered a year-on-year rise of 24 per cent in their collective gross direct premium in May this year at Rs 15,404.45 crore, data from regulator Irdai showed on Friday. Non-life insurance players had registered a gross direct premium worth Rs 12,423.98 crore in May 2021. Break-up wise, 25 general insurers among the 31 non-life players witnessed an increase of 24 per cent in the gross direct premium in May 2022 at Rs 13,566.18 crore, as against Rs 10,954.18 crore in the same month a year ago, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) data showed.

India’s foreign exchange reserves fall by $4.6 billion
India’s foreign exchange reserves for the week that ended on June 10, 2022, declined by $4.59 billion to $596.46 billion, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data showed on Friday. The previous week that ended on June 3, 2022, the total foreign exchange reserves were at $601.05 billion. The latest decline in the reserves was on account of a sizable fall in Foreign Currency Assets (FCA), which is a major component of the overall reserves.

Earthquake of 5.2 magnitude hits J&K
An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 on the richter scale hit Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, officials said. The tremor was recorded at 2:52 pm, the officials said. The epicentre of the quake was at latitude of 36.46 degrees North and longitude of 71.09 degrees East in Afghanistan, the officials said. It hit a depth of 260 km.

Mumbai’s COVID-19 test positivity rate crosses 15 pc twice this week
The COVID-19 test positivity rate (TPR) in Mumbai jumped over 15 per cent twice in the current week, civic officials said on Friday, as the metropolis battles a fresh surge in cases after the third wave of the pandemic waned earlier this year. They said TPR jumped to 15.58 per cent on June 14, when 1,724 people tested positive for coronavirus out of 11,065 tests conducted that day and then again on June 16 the rate shot up to 15.11 per cent when 2,366 new patients were detected on the back of 15,656 tests in a span of 24 hours.
