Russian Central Bank to look at gradual key rate cut at upcoming meetings

  • The Russian central bank will assess a gradual key rate reduction at upcoming meetings, Governor Elvira Nabiullina said on Thursday.
  • The central bank’s emergency rate hike to 20% in late February helped stabilise the rouble and overcome a spike in inflation, Nabiullina said earlier, speaking at the lower house of parliament, the Duma.
  • Now, having cut the rate to 17% in April, the bank is ready for more monetary easing, she said ahead of the April 29 board meeting.

Russia and Belarus will respond to the strengthening of NATO forces on the borders of their countries, TASS news agency reported on Thursday, citing a Russian diplomat. “Together with Belarusian allies we have to respond to the military strengthening of NATO forces on the borders of the Union State (Russia and Belarus) and the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization), and to coordinate steps in the international arena,” Alexey Polishchuk, a diplomat in Russia’s Foreign Ministry told TASS in an interview.

One killed, 13 injured in bus explosion in Turkey’s Bursa

A bus carrying prison guards exploded in the northwestern Turkish city of Bursa, leaving one person dead and 13 others injured, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Thursday. “As a result of the explosion that occurred yesterday in Bursa, 1 person was killed and 13 people were injured, one of them seriously injured,” Koca said on Twitter. According to the local governor, as cited by Turkish media, the blast was man-made, with the use of an improvised explosive device.

WHO chief arrives in Kathmandu on three-day visit

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus on Thursday arrived in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu for a three-day official visit. “WHO Director General @DrTedros and his delegation arrived in Kathmandu today for a three-day official visit. The visiting dignitary was received by senior officials of MoFA, MoHP and WHO at TIA,” Nepal’s Foreign Ministry tweeted. Earlier, Nepal’s Foreign Ministry in a statement said that at the invitation of Birodh Khatiwada, Minister for Health and Population, Tedros will visit Nepal from April 21 to 23, 2022.

Indian national killed, seven injured in oxygen plant explosion in Nepal

An Indian national was killed and seven others were injured on Thursday in an explosion at an oxygen plant in an industrial area in Lalitpur district near Kathmandu. The explosion occurred at the Sagarmatha Oxygen Plant inside the Patan industrial estate on Thursday morning while workers were filling in the gas in a cylinder, police said. The explosion also destroyed the zinc roof of the oxygen plant and broke windows of adjacent buildings. In the explosion, one Indian national identified as Brij Kumar Mahato died while another Indian and six Nepalese nationals were injured, police said.

Putin cancels Russian plans to storm Mariupol steel plant

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered the Russian military to cancel plans to storm the Azovstal plant in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol and said he wanted it to continue to be hermetically blockaded instead. Putin gave the order to Sergei Shoigu, his defence minister, who had previously told Putin that more than 2,000 Ukrainian fighters were still holed up in the vast plant, which has a large underground component to it.

Centre to take call on LIC IPO timing this week

The government is likely to take a call on the timing of LIC initial public offering within this week, a senior official said. The sale of 5 per cent stake or 31.6 crore shares in the country’s largest insurer was originally planned for in March, but was postponed in view of the geopolitical tension. The government has time till May 12 to launch the IPO without filing fresh papers with markets regulator Sebi. The official said it would be a tough call to decide whether to go ahead with the retail and domestic investor demand or to wait for geopolitical tension to ease and FIIs to return to market. “A decision on timing the IPO would be taken this week,” the official told PTI.

EV explosion in Telangana kills one, leaves family with burns

In Telangana’s Nizambad town, an 80-year-old man has died after the battery of their Pure EV exploded while charging overnight. Local cops have registered a case under Section 304-a (causing death due to rash or negligent act) of the IPC against the manufacturer.
TOI reports that the deceased has been identified as B Ramaswamy from Subhashnagar. According to police, Ramaswamy’s son, B Prakash, a tailor, is the owner of the electric two-wheeler. “At 12.30 am Prakash put the battery on charge and at around 4 am, it exploded triggering flames. The family suffered burn injuries. Prakash also suffered minor injuries while trying to douse the flames,” said Sai Nath, SI, Nizamabad III Town. The injured were shifted to a local hospital, while Ramaswamy succumbed to his injuries while being brought to Hyderabad for better treatment.

The curfew was lifted at 5 AM (local time) on Wednesday, police said.

The Luhansk governor said Russian forces now control 80% of the region, which is one of two regions that make up the Donbas in eastern Ukraine. One of Russia’s stated goals is to expand the territory in the Donbas under the control of Moscow-backed separatists. Before Russia invaded on Feb. 24, the Kyiv government controlled 60% of the Luhansk region.

Gov. Serhiy Haidai said the Russians, who renewed their offensive this week in eastern and southern Ukraine, have strengthened their attacks in the Luhansk region. After seizing Kreminna, Haidai said the Russians now are threatening the cities of Rubizhne and Popasna and he has urged all residents to evacuate immediately. The Donetsk region, also part of the Donbas, has seen extremely heavy fighting as well — particularly around the port city of Mariupol.

Three soldiers injured in gunfight with militants in Baramulla

Three soldiers were injured in an encounter between security forces and militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district in the early hours of Thursday, police said. Based on specific inputs about the presence of militants in the Malwah area of Baramulla in north Kashmir, the security forces had launched a cordon-and-search operation there, a police official said.

IMF urges India to prioritise food security

Applauding India for prioritising public investment in its annual budget, the International Monetary Fund has urged the country to prioritise food security and expand transfers to the vulnerable in the wake of the global economic crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine. Paolo Mauro, Deputy Director, Fiscal Affairs Department of the IMF told reporters on Wednesday during a news conference held here on the sidelines of the annual Spring meeting of the IMF and the World Bank that the challenges coming from the economic consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine were “quite sever”.

India-US defence relationship is ‘trusted one’

When I am asked about what I am most proud of during my years at the Pentagon, I say I’m proud of my relationship with India,” she said.
