Stock Market Highlights
: Indian equity benchmarks BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 started the week deep in the red amid across-the-board selling, tracking weakness across global markets as investors remained concerned about worsening inflation and fears that it may trigger faster-than-expected hikes in COVID-era interest rates. Losses in oil & gas, IT and FMCG shares pulled the headline indices sharply lower, though gains in heavyweights such as ICICI Bank, HDFC and HDFC Bank limited the downside. Broader markets also suffered losses, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices falling 1.9 percent and 2.4 percent respectively. Globally, the Fed’s hawkish tone, and updates on the Russia-Ukraine war and rising COVID infections in parts of the world remained on investors’ radar.
